Campaigns
The European Coalition has been actively lobbying the European Union institutions since 1992. Initially it was formed to campaign against the use of animals to test cosmetics, and to ensure that the 6th Amendment to the Cosmetics Directive introduced a ban on the marketing of cosmetics tested on animals. Since then the European Coalition has continued to campaign on the cosmetics testing issue, and all other European legislation connected with animal experimentation.
The European Coalition has campaigned for an end to animal experiments governed by legislation on the treatment of laboratory animals (86/609/EEC), the 7th amendment to the cosmetics directive (76/768/EEC) and recently on the European Commission's REACH proposal establishing a regulatory framework for the evaluation and authorisation of chemicals (2003/0256/COD and 2003/0257/COD). We have also lobbied hard for increased funding for the development and validation of non-animal alternative testing methods, both through the JRC (Joint Research Centre) and ECVAM (European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods) budgets and through the Multiannual Framework Programmes for Research and Development.
