EU-wide campaign to ban animal experiments for cleaning products unites groups across Europe

Today the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE), a coalition of leading animal protection organisations, is launching an EU-wide campaign to end animal testing for household cleaning products.

The Euro-wide campaign aims to place the issue of animal-tested household cleaning products on the EU political agenda and gain support from MEPs, the European Commission and member state governments for the introduction of a ban across Europe.

In March 2013, after 20 years of campaigning, the ECEAE successfully led the campaign to end the use of animals to test cosmetics in the EU. Focus has now shifted to the use of animals to test ingredients for cleaning products such as washing up liquid, floor polish and air fresheners.

Currently in Europe, animals can still be used in cruel and painful experiments to develop household products such as laundry detergent, furniture polish and bathroom cleaners.  Such experiments include toxicity tests where animals may be force-fed high doses of substances or be exposed to toxic chemicals. The effects can cause animals to suffer from vomiting, seizures, internal bleeding and organ damage. Even when the test is not fatal, animals are routinely killed afterwards.

Major high street retailers are already responding to increasing public concern about this issue. A growing number of companies and brands, including Ecover, Marks and Spencer and method have gained Leaping Bunny certification and are supporting the campaign, ensuring that no animal testing takes place for their productsand demonstrating that it is possible to sell safe and effective household products without inflicting pain and suffering on animals.

Michelle Thew, Chief Executive, ECEAE stated: “We successfully campaigned for an EU ban on testing cosmetics on animals, now our goal is to make household products cruelty free. Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats and mice suffer and die to test the ingredients that go into everyday household products such as washing up liquid, air fresheners and furniture polish.  We want Europe to send a message to world leaders and clean up cruelty by ending animal testing for household products. Please sign up today and make a real difference to the lives of animals in laboratories”.
