European Parliament endorses Commissioner Borg!

The No Cruel Cosmetics campaign, run by the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE), has taken a significant leap forward today following the European Parliament’s endorsement of Mr Tonio Borg for the post of Commissioner for the Health and Consumer Affairs portfolio. The responsibilities of this post include overseeing the implementation of the 2013 EU marketing ban in the European Commission.

With Mr Borg’s written commitment that he will ensure that no animal tested cosmetics are imported in the EU from March 2013, this endorsement is met with a warm welcome from the ECEAE and its supporters.

The ECEAE has led the campaign across Europe to end the import and sale of animal tested cosmetics. We have urged that there be no postponement or exceptions added to the 2013 marketing ban deadline, as that would lead to thousands of animals continuing to suffer in countries around the world for cosmetics sold within the EU. We have taken our message out to politicians, the public and industry achieving widespread support.

The final step in the appointment is for the European Council to confirm the appointment before the end of the year.
