ECEAE takes No Cruel Cosmetics campaign to Brussels

Yesterday the European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE) took its No Cruel Cosmetics campaign to end the import and sale of animal tested cosmetics in the EU, to Brussels for an all-day event.

A well-attended breakfast briefing held at the European Parliament started the proceedings. Hosted by Chris Davies MEP, MEPs and EU officials had the opportunity to hear speeches on the key issues, including alternatives to animal cosmetics testing, from BUAV’s Senior Science Advisor, Dr Katy Taylor and Director of Policy, Dr Nick Palmer along with Dr Irmela Ruhdel from the Deutsche Tierschutzbund.

British Liberal Democrat MEP, Chris Davies, who worked on the Cosmetics legislation a decade ago that introduced the testing ban and hosted the breakfast briefing stated:

"Much progress has been made by the cosmetics industry and others in developing non-animal tests, and although some difficulties remain I am not convinced by suggestions that we need relax the prohibitions in any way at all.

"We can find a way around the problems, and in doing so we shall strengthen the reputation of the European cosmetics industry, set a global standard, and, of course, avoid unnecessary suffering to animals."

Throughout the day, representatives from ECEAE member groups attended several key meetings with official representatives from the EU Council, Commission and Presidency.

Our No Cruel Cosmetics petition reached almost a quarter of a million signatures and yesterday was the opportunity for the ECEAE to hand in the petition to the EU petitions committee. Thank you to everyone who has supported this important campaign.

The No Cruel Cosmetics event was then brought to a dynamic close with a flash-mob choir who took to the streets of Brussels to spread the message of the campaign and call for No Exceptions, No Postponement, No Cruel Cosmetics. You can watch a video of the day’s activities here.
