The ECEAE is today marking the first anniversary of our No Cruel Cosmetics campaign to end the sale of new animal tested cosmetics and toiletries in the EU.
Many people are unaware that despite UK and EU bans on animal testing for cosmetics, products can still be tested on animals outside Europe and then imported for sale. A marketing ban which would end this cruelty is due to come into effect in 2013. However, it is now in danger of a delay, putting thousands more animals at risk.
We launched the No Cruel Cosmetics campaign to send out a strong message to decision-makers that EU citizens do not want any more animals to suffer and die for cosmetics sold in Europe. The Commission has yet to announce its proposal, but here are some of the ways we have been working over the past 12 months to ensure there are No Cruel Cosmetics in Europe:
In the public eye
• Celebrities including Sir Paul McCartney, Morrissey, Sienna Miller, Bojan Jambrošić, Jodie Kidd, Jenny Seagrove and Kimberly Wyatt have all spoken out against cruel cosmetics on behalf of the campaign.
• We have received widespread media coverage in national and international magazines and newspapers, as well as featuring on Czech TV!
• Cosmetics companies certified under the international Humane Cosmetics Standard (HCS) have supported the No Cruel Cosmetics campaign by signing a joint statement to the European Commission stating they would be dismayed if the ban is delayed.
Backing from compassionate supporters
• Over 151,000 people have added their names to our petition and said NO to Cruel Cosmetics in Europe.
• Hundreds of people have helped us spread the word on Facebook and Twitter and by adding the No Cruel Cosmetics Twibbon to their profile picture to show their support for the campaign.
• Supporters from across Europe have joined the No Cruel Cosmetics campaign on the streets of Belgrade, Bristol, Dortmund, Dublin, Exeter, Lisbon, London, Milan, Rome and Zagreb.
• The ECEAE has organised a significant debate in the European Parliament on the use of animal testing in the cosmetics industry, ensuring the issue is firmly in the mind of politicians.
• We have been a strong voice for animals in meetings with European decision-makers and are continuing to put pressure on them to maintain the 2013 deadline.
• Over 200 politicians have publicly supported the campaign over the course of the year.
• UK Member the BUAV published a groundbreaking report challenging the European Commission’s assumption of the necessity of animal testing for cosmetics and detailing the alternative approaches available to cosmetics companies.
