ECEAE welcomes support for cosmetics animal testing ban from EU Animal Welfare Chief

The European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE) has today welcomed a comment made by EU Animal Welfare Chief Andrea Gavinelli supporting the deadline for the EU ban on animal tested cosmetics.

The EU is due to ban the sale of all new cosmetics and toiletries that have been tested on animals outside the EU from 2013. However, officials are considering extending this deadline.

The 2013 ban on new animal tested cosmetics falls outside of Andrea Gavinelli’s remit, however he has shown his support for the ban to go ahead: “it's clear that this is an important moment to stay on course”.

The ECEAE launched the No Cruel Cosmetics campaign to uphold the ban on the sale of new animal tested cosmetics without further delay. Over 100,000 caring consumers and celebrities including Sir Paul McCartney have already signed the ECEAE’s No Cruel Cosmetics petition, showing huge public opposition to the continued use of animals in cruel tests for cosmetics sold in the EU.

Michelle Thew, Chief Executive of ECEAE said: “We welcome this statement from Andrea Gavinelli supporting the deadline for the EU ban on animal tested cosmetics. We urge the European Commission to heed his statement along with support from EU member states and thousands of EU citizens. Concerned citizens should continue their support for this important issue by signing the ECEAE’s No Cruel Cosmetics petition at www.NoCruelCosmetics.org”.
