Deutscher Tierschutzbund - the German Animal Welfare Federation - was founded in 1881 as the umbrella organisation of animal welfare societies in Germany. The societies joined together in order to become able to act against animal abuse more effectively.
Today 16 federal state associations and over 700 local animal welfare societies, comprising more than 800,000 members and over 500 animal shelters, are associated with the German Animal Welfare Federation.
The staff of the German Animal Welfare Federation´s Animal Welfare Academy in Munich provides the scientific basis for political lobbying. One of its major working areas is the abolition of animal experiments. In order to make a practical contribution to this goal, the Animal Welfare Academy runs its own cell culture laboratory performing non-animal methods research.
